A nightstand can become a crowded platform for a lamp before the objects you need at bedtime have found a place. Begin with those objects: glasses, a book, water, a phone, or whatever belongs in your own routine. A table that holds them comfortably is more useful than one chosen only to match the bed frame.
Measure beside the made bed
Compare the tabletop height with the top of the mattress after the bedding is in place. You should be able to reach the surface comfortably while lying or sitting in bed. A thick mattress or topper can change this relationship enough that a table which worked with an older bed now feels too low.
Check the gap between the bed and wall, but also the space needed to open a drawer. A drawer that catches the duvet or strikes the bed frame will be irritating every evening. Handles add depth too, particularly in a narrow passage beside the bed.
Allocate the top honestly
If you use a table lamp, mark its base on paper alongside the other objects. A broad lamp base can consume most of a compact table. A smaller appropriate lamp, or an alternative lighting arrangement installed correctly, may let the table remain useful without becoming larger.
Do not add a decorative tray automatically. It can gather small items, but it also reduces the flexible surface available for a book or glass. Leave the area you reach for most often clear.
Decide what should be hidden
A drawer is convenient for personal items and cables. An open shelf makes a current book easy to find. Both are useful only if the contents fit. Check internal dimensions rather than assuming the outside width represents the storage space.
Keep charging equipment arranged according to its instructions with appropriate ventilation. Route cords so they cannot be pulled across the walking space or trapped by a drawer. Built-in charging features should be evaluated for compatibility and safe use, not treated as a reason to accept the wrong furniture size.
Two sides of a bed can have different needs. One person may prefer a drawer, another a clear open table. Similar heights or a related finish can connect those choices. The bedroom will feel more settled when each side supports the person using it, even if the tables are not identical.
